About Ms. Chase: This is my 29th year teaching, 2 years as an Academic Coach and 4 years as an Assistant Principal in Baltimore City Public Schools. This is my third year at Hazelwood EMS #210.  I am originally from Baltimore, Maryland. I have a bachelor’s degree in early childhood and master’s degree in administration and Supervision. I believe learning should be fun!  To help engage students and encourage them to have fun while learning, I utilize all kinds of instructional practices, such as technology, hands-on independent learning time, and differentiated instruction, to encourage students to be active learners. In addition to making learning fun, I believe learning can take place in any environment, whether it’s in the classroom, on the playground, or at home (which is where I’ll need your help!).

 

About Ms. Stephenson:  This is my 11th year with Baltimore City Public Schools and 3rd year as a Teacher at Hazelwood EMS #210.  I have two outstanding sons, one twenty- three and one seventeen who is a senior in high school! I also have a four-year-old daughter that I adore.  I graduated from Coppin State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education.  I love working with children and supporting their families to make a difference in their child’s lives.  I will supply a safe environment for my students and ensure that they are always engaged in learning.

 

Expectations: We hold our students to a high standard of responsibility and respect.  All students are expected to come to school on time (8am), in uniform, prepared with their folder and a pencil.  It is each student’s responsibility to ensure they are prepared to learn each day, as this will encourage them to take ownership for their own learning.  We recognize that not all students will get along at all times— as this is how the real world is too— but everyone is required to treat each other with respect.  This means treating others how they would want to be treated: keeping hands, feet, and objects to themselves, solving problems with words only, and treating people and property with kindness.  Physical fighting will not be tolerated.

 

2019-2020 Learning Goals

All goals are in accordance with the Common Core State Standards to prepare students for the next grade and, ultimately, become college and career ready.

 

Literacy Goals: All students will grow a minimum of 3 reading levels by May 2020.  All students will develop skills in phonics and decoding, which will help with reading and writing comprehension.  Wit & Wisdom is our English curriculum. It builds knowledge of key topics in history, science, and literature through the study of excellent texts. By reading and responding to stories and nonfiction texts, we will build knowledge of the following topics:

 

Math Goals:  Eureka Math

Sequence of Kindergarten Modules Summary of the Year: Kindergarten mathematics is about (1) representing, relating, and operating on whole numbers, initially with sets of objects; and (2) describing shapes and space. Key Areas of Focus for K-2: Addition and subtraction- concepts, skills and problem solving Required Fluency: K.OA.5- Add and subtract within 5.

 

Social Studies Goals:

Students will gain a thorough understanding of community and neighborhood.  This includes understanding the role each person plays in a community, as well as their role in a school, family, and town community.

 

Science Goals:

Students will gain a thorough understanding of Scientific Inquiry, Investigating States of Matter, Earth, Sun, and Moon, Plants, Food chains, and Scientific Tools (Thermometers, microscopes, balanced scales, etc.)

Informative/Explanatory Writing Models, Opinion/Argument Writing Models and Narrative Writing Models

What we’ll learn this year in Kindergarten

 

English Language Arts We will be using Fundations (an interactive student-led phonics program) for phonics, Wit and Wisdom (a whole-world curriculum that broadens students understanding of reading around the world using fiction and non-fiction texts) for reading and reading comprehension.

•        Module 1: The Five Senses – In this first module, we will study the five senses. Studying the five senses lays a foundation for knowledge of human biology. We will learn how we see, hear, taste, touch, and smell as we ask the question: How do our senses help us to learn?

 

•          Module 2: Once Upon a Farm – In this second module, Once Upon a Farm, we will study life on the farm. As we explore the familiar and vibrant farm, we ask the question: What makes a great story?

 

•          Module 3: America Then and Now – In this third module, America, Then and Now, we will study how certain aspects of American life have changed over time. As we explore the past and the present, we ask the question: How has life in America changed over time?

 

•          Module 4: The Continent – In the fourth module, The Continents, we will study characteristics of the seven continents to learn more about the world and understand the similarities and differences amongst the continents. As we explore each continent, we ask the question: What makes the world fascinating?

Social Studies Baltimore City Public School’s Social Studies curriculum will be utilized, which focuses on community and social interactions throughout the year.  There will also be several opportunities to engage in cultural theme topics, such as Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month.

Grading Information and Communication

 

The Kindergarten team at Hazelwood Elementary Middle School use the following grading practices.  We will enter grades for each subject at least weekly.  You can find updated information about grades at www.baltimorecitypublicschools.org/campus-portal

 

All grades are the average of the quarterly grades.

 

Component Definition
Assessments 70% This category includes both formative (ongoing) and summative (culminating) of assessing student learning with the goals of supporting student growth and success. This will include, but is not limited to end of Module assessments, vocabulary assessments, quarterly projects, weekly spelling tests, and daily Exit Tickets.
Classwork 10% This includes practice work completed in the classroom setting.
Participation 5% This includes but is not limited to participation in classroom discussion, group work, and activities.
Homework %5 This includes all work completed outside the classroom. Homework will be given WEEKLY on Mondays and collected the following Monday.  Encourage your child to try his/her best.  Homework is not checked for right or wrong, but rather if it was attempted and effort is present.  All work must be submitted with a name in order to be given credit.

 

Additional Information and Resources

 

Make-up Work:  We will provide makeup work within 3 school days of the student’s last absence (if necessary).  Students must turn in assignments within seven (7) school days after they are provided by the teacher. The time allowed for makeup work may be extended on a case-by-case basis for extenuating circumstances.

 

Coach Class: Coach class will be offered bi-weekly on Tuesdays 3-3:45. Parents are encouraged to attend with their student to ensure skills can be reinforced at home.

 

Class Dojo:  We will be using Class Dojo to track student participation, behavior, homework completion, and daily attendance.  Respect and responsibility will be heavily emphasized in Class Dojo points.  Points can be traded in for prizes and used for incentive-based activities.  Students MUST have 80% positive points per month to attend incentive-based activities (ex: Fun Friday). We will also send messages and post pictures on Class Dojo so you can hear and see what we’re up to!

 

Field Trips: Throughout the school year we will be going in several field trips, including the pumpkin patch, zoo, and aquarium.  If you have recommendations for any other great locations, please let me know!
