Dear Students and Families,

Welcome to Ms. Currin’s fourth grade class! I’m excited about the opportunity to get to know you, and I’m looking forward to a happy and productive school year by working with each student and the family. I have been a teacher for over 20 years, and have very high expectations for all my students. I believe that “knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family.”

Kofi Annan

The curriculum areas I will focus on this year include reading, writing, math, science and social studies.

Students are asked to bring the following supplies to school:

  • 8 composition or spiral notebooks
  • A box of sandwich bags
  • A container of Clorox Wipes
  • A container of hand sanitizer
  • A box of Kleenex
  • 4 two pocket folders

My homework policy is that homework will be done every day. It should be completed and returned on its Due Date. Weekly Homework Packets are given on Monday and should be returned the next Monday. Check the Due Date on the Weekly Homework Packet. A part of the homework policy is that students should read every day for at least 30 minutes as a fourth grader. Please make sure what is read is recorded on the Reading Log students bring on. Homework reinforces and supports the skills taught during the instructional day and that is why it matters.

My assignment grading policy is as follows:

Excellent                    90% – 100%

Good                          80% – 89%

Satisfactory               70% – 79%

Poor                            60% – 69%

Unsatisfactory           59% and below

Baltimore City has implemented a grading policy this school year to be used for report cards. The policy is as follows:

Component Percent % Explanation
Assessments 70% This category will include formative (ongoing) and summative (culminating) assignments that look at student learning and student growth. It also supports and is aligned to the district’s goals and expectations. Activities/Assignments included will Test, Quizzes, Projects, Research Papers
Classwork 15% This area includes work done during the instructional that practices and reinforce skills taught during the instructional day (EX. answering questions about a text/story, Exit Tickets, completing graphic organizers, writing paragraphs/stories).
Participation 5% This includes, but is not limited to participation in classroom discussions, group work and other activities.
Homework 5% This includes all work completed outside of the classroom (EX. Weekly Homework Packets, Reading Logs, Book Reports, Interviews).

Hazelwood Elementary Middle School is a uniform school. Students should be in uniform daily. Our school colors are red and beige/khaki. Students are expected to wear a red top with a khaki bottom. We also have a cell phone policy in place. The classroom teacher will collect phones at the beginning of the day, and return them at dismissal.

Class Dojo will be used to communicate the daily behavior of students and the points that were earned or deducted for behavior. Students who have 25 or more points a week will be able to have a Fun Friday. It will also be used to keep families informed of school-wide activities, and can be used to communicate with the teacher.

Please be on the lookout for parent conference dates to put on your calendar. Studies show that parental involvement in a child’s education is one of the strongest indicators of student achievement. We hope you will make it a priority this year to attend as many school-sponsored events as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like to visit our classroom, schedule a conference, or volunteer to help out, you can contact me by phone, email or through Class Dojo.

Coach Class will begin on September 30th, 2019. Coach class will be provided for 0402 in room 205. Coach Class will take place from 3-4:30 pm every Monday school is open. Forty-five minutes has been designated for each subject area (ELA and math). Since I provide instruction for both subjects, I want the students to be as successful as they possibly can, and am here to support them in every way possible.  If your child plans to attend please let me know how they will be in attendance and how they will be expected to go home at the conclusion of Coach Class using Class Dojo.

Makeup work will be provided within three (3) days of a student’s absence from school. All missed assignments must be completed and turned in within seven (7) days after they are provided the assignment by me.

Once again, welcome to fourth grade. Let’s work together, keep the channels of communication open and make this the best year ever! Remember, “Our destiny is not written for us, it’s written by us.” Barack Obama
