“Soaring to Excellence”

Candace McConnaughey
Pre-kindergarten Teacher

About Me: This is my 14th year teaching in Baltimore City Public Schools, and second year at Hazelwood Elementary Middle School. I have degrees in Psychology and Teaching. I have a passion for teaching children in early childhood education. I believe the students need a strong foundation from which to build. It is very rewarding to see the progress the students make each year!

Schoolwide Grading Policy: Assessments 70%, Classwork 20%, Homework 5%, Participation 5%

Expectations: We hold our students to a high standard of responsibility and respect. All students are expected to come to school on time (8am), in uniform, prepared with their folder.

Curriculum: We will be using FUNdations (an interactive student-led phonics program) for phonics, the Eureka Math curriculum, and Baltimore City Public School’s English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science curriculums. We focus a lot of time learning the letters of the alphabet, the letter sounds, sight words,
rote counting to 30 and counting objects to 10.

Homework: Homework will be given WEEKLY on Mondays and collected the following Monday. Encourage your child to try his/her best. Homework is not checked for right or wrong, but rather if it was attempted and effort is present. All work must be submitted with a name in order to be given credit.

Assessments: The students will be assessed quarterly on letter recognition, letter sounds, number recognition, and counting.

Projects: Projects will be given quarterly and will focus on what we are learning in school. Please look for these assignments in your child’s folder each quarter.

Class Dojo: We will be using Class Dojo to send messages, reminders, etc.

Field Trips: Throughout the school year we will be going in several field trips, including the pumpkin patch, zoo, and aquarium. If you have recommendations for any other great locations, please let me know!
